It's six days into the new year, are you still enthused, excited, driven, etc. As many of you will know this is the time when many people make promises they sometimes cannot keep or are uncertain about where to start. They know what they want, but as it relates to achieving such, there is where the challenge comes. In one of my articles last year we highlighted a Forbes study where just 8% of people ever achieve their New Year's Resolutions.
"Just 8% Of People Achieve Their New Years Resolutions" - Forbes
In this article, we will take a look at the seven things we need to "BE" to be part of that 8%.
Be - Open Minded: Achievement of anything means that there has to be a change somewhere and the most significant has to be a change in mindset. If your 2018 goal or resolution is new or it's a carryover from a year to two, the standard prerequisite is to have an open mind in trying new techniques, strategies, etc. to be able to proceed to the next level. A few things to being open-minded to are new-ideas, strategies, criticism, developing new relationships, etc.
"The significant problems we face today, cannot be solved at the same level of thinking from when they were first created” - Albert Einstein
Be - Inspired: Having a goal is one thing but being inspired to follow through on this goal is another. We all have different sources of inspiration, from books, speakers, movies, personal drive, friends, co-workers, clients, etc. One of my biggest sources of inspiration at this present time is my fourteen (14) year old daughter, as she is at an age where seeing her mother and I pursue our goals and achieve them is encouraging to her, not to mention as parents it keeps us accountable. Hearing her say "wow daddy, that's really cool" after sharing small milestones with her is a big thing for both of us.
Be - Honest: The use of the term "Integrity" can be so cliched in this day and age as everyone that we help with some high esteem, seems to have a strange dark past or side life. However, the honesty I speak about does not relate to how we do business with our clients, interact with colleagues, friends, etc. but to be honest with yourself. There is nothing worse than fooling ourselves into thinking that we are in a better place or do not need to make any change when it's pretty apparent that we must. Being able to say "this is where I am now" adds clarity to the work required in getting us where we need to "Be" in 2018. Self-assessments are not always the easiest thing, and sometimes it's easier for someone else to tell us what we think we need to hear, but a large percentage of the time we already know what needs to be done.
Be - Steadfast: We have all done it at some point in our lives, get pumped at the start of the year. Make a list of a few things we want to achieve, start the year doing them and somewhere along the way within 3 hours, 3 days, 3 weeks, or 3 months we lose focus, zeal, etc. ultimately never achieve anything. This only sets us back a year or worse, discourages us so much that we never look at this goal again. Steadfastness / Commitment is a part of achieving anything, it's not always easy, but that's where having a deep understanding your "WHY" is so important. Why you decided to have this goal is can be the only and most important source of inspiration you need to carry you through. Let you "WHY" give you wings......Redbull effect
Be - Of Value: This is important for all entrepreneurs as value is a key part of our proposition to our customers. However, I'll take it a level deeper, by encouraging everyone reading this to look at "VALUE" from a person-to-person standpoint. Regardless of the nature of your business, human interaction is inevitable and the way we interact with others is important to our personal and professional growth. If the current space you are in, does not have a high level of positive human interaction, I suggest you try being the example and attempt to change it or find somewhere that encourages that level of interaction.
"It's important that we have our own values and live by them" - Lyndon Brathwaite
Be - Faithful: It's said that "To walk 1000 miles, you must make your first step" my takeaway with this has always been that no matter how tired or dejected you become, no matter the peaks or throughs you encounter the goal of achieving 1000 miles will be achieved once you keep moving forward. We are never sure what we will encounter on the journey, but staying true to the cause "your WHY" increases your faith. Faithfulness is vital to success.
Believe: As good as the previous six (6) points are, without a strong belief system everything goes to waste. Believing in yourself provides inspiration, purpose and commitment which are key ingredients to achieving whatever you set your mind to.
